About Relaxation

Have you ever been involved in or overheard a conversation of two people:

First (1st ): You are so tense!
Second (2nd ): Am I!?
1st : You just need to relax!
2nd : But I am relaxed!
1st : No, you are not! Just lower your shoulders!
2nd : But I have no more room to lower them!
1st : But you’re still tense….!!!
Conversations like these usually spin in circles and go nowhere fast. Have you ever wondered why? Because neither person truly knows what is exactly needed in order to relax effectively. It’s not enough just to say, “Relax!” And it certainly isn’t enough to simply lower your shoulders. Even more, the person in question most likely has very little to absolutely no awareness of their muscle tension as a baseline to start from. Beginning with ‘letting go’, and then progressing into ‘how to go’, is the process of true relaxation.

A detailed muscle tension profile will give you a good understanding of the specific areas and levels of your tension. From there, you will be introduced to relaxation strategies with indicators of deep relaxation (“where to go”). These specific strategies are based on reversing your stress response, known as the “fight or flight” response, toward a relaxation response. Finding and spending time with your relaxation response is a great way to improve your overall health and performance. With time and practice, becoming less sensitive to stress is the ultimate ‘how and where to go’ from long term perspective.

Over the course of our work together, you will learn a variety of different relaxation response techniques including breath control, muscle relaxation, imagery, autogenic, deepening and mini techniques.

With a solid education and consistent practice, you will learn how to develop skills for:

  • controlling tension and stress in any life situation
  • reduced sensitivity to stress
  • mind and body relaxation
  • improved focus and concentration
  • better symptom control
  • increased pain threshold
  • increased energy
  • improved sleep
  • enhanced immune function
  • better emotional control
